Philips / Saeco Error 05: air in the water circuit

Error 05 means: Air is trapped in the water circuit.

Short answer. The pump is running but drawing air rather than water, so no pressure builds. A freshly fitted AquaClean filter that was not primed is the usual cause; an empty tank, a tank not pushed onto its valve, or scale in the inlet are the others.

How to fix Error 05

  1. Empty and refill the tank; if you have just fitted an AquaClean filter, shake it for five seconds, hold it upside down in a jug of water until no bubbles rise, then refit.
  2. Push the tank fully home.
  3. Switch on, wait for heat-up, then dispense two or three cups of hot water to purge the circuit.
  4. If the pump still only wheezes, descale; a scaled inlet will not let the pump prime.

When to stop and call a repairer

If the pump runs continuously and never primes after descaling, the pump or a valve has failed.

What it costs

Parts: Nothing for priming; pump $30 to $50.

Service: Out-of-warranty manufacturer service for a super-automatic is typically $250 to $500 including return shipping; independent espresso repairers are usually cheaper for a single part.

Worth repairing? Yes.

FAQ

What does Error 05 mean on the Philips / Saeco?

Air is trapped in the water circuit. The pump is running but drawing air rather than water, so no pressure builds. A freshly fitted AquaClean filter that was not primed is the usual cause; an empty tank, a tank not pushed onto its valve, or scale in the inlet are the others.

Can I fix Error 05 myself?

DIY difficulty: easy. Empty and refill the tank; if you have just fitted an AquaClean filter, shake it for five seconds, hold it upside down in a jug of water until no bubbles rise, then refit. Push the tank fully home.

How much does it cost to fix Error 05?

Nothing for priming; pump $30 to $50. Out-of-warranty manufacturer service for a super-automatic is typically $250 to $500 including return shipping; independent espresso repairers are usually cheaper for a single part.

Is it worth repairing?

Yes.

Error 05 during startup or during use?

Philips / Saecos report Error 05 any. That timing is a useful clue when narrowing the cause.

Can I keep using the machine with Error 05 showing?

Generally yes — Error 05 is more of an annoyance than an emergency. Fix it when convenient; just do not let the cause sit for months.

Will Error 05 clear on its own?

Often, yes. The first step (empty and refill the tank; if you have just fitted an aquaclean filter, shake it for five seconds, hold it upside down in a jug of water until no bubbles rise, then refit) clears a share of cases on its own. If the code comes straight back, the part is genuinely at fault.

How long does the repair take?

Fifteen to thirty minutes with basic tools, once you have the part.
